This was a really fun redesign project for a client who wanted a trio of stacking rings - utilizing diamonds that she already had. And while she loves my signature design style, I wanted to push the boundaries and create something with a little extra “edgy flair” for this Modern Marvel redesign. I mean, this client has the most fabulous assortment of princess-cut, cushion-cut, round-cut and even black diamonds to boot. I had a field day with this one! Read on to see how this Modern Marvel made its fabulous and oh-so-edgy debut.
A little bit of (Gemmy) rock and roll
We began with the perfect mix of materials to work with. With a little bit of 14K rose gold here and some sterling silver there, why not make a fabulous two-toned duo? And that's just what we did - highlight the bands with a combination of white diamonds and black diamonds; throw a beautiful trio of princess-cut and cushion-cut diamonds into the mix, add a little asymmetry and you're good to go! Doesn’t sound too complicated, right? And to add to this awesomeness even more, we could even repurpose the 14 karat rose gold that my client already had. Bonus!
Getting the right form
For this stacking trio, I began with the creation of the bands. Adding sterling silver with just the right amount of wave commenced the formation process. The bands quickly began taking their rightful form, leaving us headed towards the layout of gemstones - my favorite part! 👏
Gotta love versatility
Although all the rings would be ultimately worn together, we wanted each band to have its own signature style. For the first “top” band, we started with the main princess-cut diamond offset to the left in a 14-karat rose gold bezel setting, accented with both white and black diamonds. For the second “middle” band, versatility was key when we decided on simply alternating white and black diamonds, which could be worn with just about anything! Then the third “bottom” band would complete the trio with the main cushion-cut diamond offset to the right, flanked by two smaller princess-cut diamonds on each side and accented with asymmetric splashes of white and black diamonds.
Ultimately, the beauty of these bands is that they can be worn together creating a unique and asymmetric, yet beautifully balanced arrangement, but can also be worn individually making their own little unique statements. Gotta love versatility!
Precise setting
The stone setting on this piece was quite intricate to say the least. With 26 stones, the setting process was not only methodical and detailed, but had to be precisely calculated to the “t”. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. One by one, the stones were set and the piece came to life.
We’ve made it to the polishing phase - yay!
Each stone and setting received the proper detailing - technically speaking, a little graver work here, a little polishing disc there - which really brought the design from raw to polished and beautiful! This stacking trio is so uniquely interesting, with lots of versatility and a modern flair. The two-tone look is just perfect for my client and the black and white diamonds are so much fun. I love it when a piece finally comes together!
The Modern Marvel
So here she is - a Modern Marvel trio that is ready for all of life's adventures. I couldn't be more proud of this piece; and believe it or not - this was my first time working with black diamonds! I do hope to work with them again soon, as they really bring a lot of character and interest to the mix.
