Earrings Guide

Earrings may be one-size-fits-all, but that doesn’t mean that one size is perfect for all. Since we’re aiming for personalized perfection here, there are a few things to think about when choosing a pair of earrings.

Start with your own comfort, any allergies, and - of course - what you like! Here’s a quick and easy guide to picking the perfect pair of earrings for you.

Introduction to Earring Styles

Earring Types

There are three basic earring styles: studs, hoops, and dangles. Stud earrings are set on a post and flush to the ear. Hoops are classic circular frames that go all the way around the earlobe. Dangle earrings come in the biggest variety of shapes and sizes, but essentially they are any pendant earring that swings freely from the ear.

Choosing the Right Metals

Metals

Because the skin on the ear is very sensitive, allergies to certain metals are quite common. (We all remember the horror stories of cheap earrings turning our earlobes green!) Nickel is the most likely metal to cause allergic reactions, but I do not use any of it in my earrings (or my jewelry in general.). All of my earrings are sterling silver or 18K gold and my solders are also nickel-free.

It’s much less common to have an allergy to silver, but it does happen. Fortunately, there are many gold earring designs available on my site. When in doubt, I recommend opting for gold earrings or even platinum.

Choosing the Right Size

Earring Sizes

Many people love big statement earrings, but some find heavy earrings uncomfortable. That’s why many of my designs are available in multiple sizes. If you’re headache-prone or simply don’t like large earrings, opt for the mini or petite versions.

My Ripple Hoops are available in both standard and grand sizes, for the fashionistas out there. If you’re looking for itty bitty hoops, the Spiraling Wave earrings delicately hug the ear in the most petite hoop possible.

Earring Backs and Hooks

The number one piece of advice I have for earrings is to always wear the rubber stopper! I know it can seem redundant to put that stopper in after the metal earring back (using both the ear nut and the rubber back at the same time), but it makes a huge difference. Don’t lose your earrings!

All of my earrings are made with simple posts for studs and French hooks for dangles. For extra security, I also offer a lever-back upgrade. Just reach out and let us know if you’re interested.

Layering Earrings

layering

I am a huge supporter of layering and stacking jewelry, so it should come as no surprise that extends to earrings. I love contrasting simple studs, like the Seashell Speckle, with larger statement pieces, like the Glitter Trail. These days, even a full ear of sparkle can be sophisticated and classy. Go go ahead and get those extra piercings. There’s more opportunity to express yourself and have fun!

As the sun sets over the horizon, the mingling colors reflect off the smooth surface of an oystershell, which slowly breathes open, revealing its hidden treasure. The Horizon Earrings celebrate the union of sea and sky. Each piece features a lovely freshwater pearl in an organic oyster form nestled at the base of a hand-textured circular frame. Carefully placed silver granules add additional texture and visual complexity. Choose between white, peach, or lovely lavender pearl in polished silver or opt for an eye-catching patina finish to “pop” the pearls.

The Pearl Collection is a demure ode to the classic pearl necklace. Each piece features an ethically sourced freshwater pearl, set in hand-made sterling silver designs. The collection combines timeless Southern charm with modern technique and just a hint of playfulness. These pearl pieces are fresh, fun, and elegant, ideal for any occasion.

These handcrafted earrings feature 9-10mm pearls that are gently resting in sterling silver cups and measure 25mm in length, by 23mm at the widest point, for a total hang length of approximately 35mm. The featured pearls are half-drilled and mounted on sterling silver posts, then secured with a touch of epoxy for a two-part hold. Rubber earring backs are included with these dangle/ear-wire style earrings. We recommend always securing your earrings with the provided rubber earring backs, to ensure secure placement.

To add contrast to the piece, if desired, we offer the option of having the area behind the pearl treated with a dark patina, at no additional cost to you! Simply select "Yes" to “Patina Finish” when checking out.

At Kristen Baird® Jewelry, we use partially to fully recycled sterling silver. The pearls used are carefully selected in line with our commitment to social responsibility. Each piece is precisely handcrafted in our Savannah, GA studio.  As proof of authenticity, each piece is stamped with the .925 quality mark and whenever possible, is signed/marked with the Kristen Baird® maker’s mark, prior to delivery.

Due to the natural characteristics of pearls along with the handcrafted nature of our one-of-a-kind designs, each piece may contain slight variances from the photos shown. These variances allow uniqueness in every creation, but never take away from the quality of work or the complexity of design.

Current production time is 1-3 weeks for items that require creation, sizing, or customization, but fear not, we do have items that are ready to ship! For specific details, please contact us at kristen@kristenbaird.com
